The Call: Barcelona’s Jewish Quarter
Barcelona was home to one of the most important and vibrant Jewish communities on the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. The Jewish quarter, known as El Call, located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, was the center of Sephardic life from the 9th to the 14th century. This network of narrow streets housed a population that at its peak represented up to 15% of the city’s inhabitants.
Today, walking through El Call means discovering the remnants of a millenary history: from the Main Synagogue to Casa Adret, now a Jewish cultural center, and the Hebrew inscriptions still hidden in the neighborhood’s walls.
