Segovia: Living Sephardic History in the Heart of Castile

To the south of the city, Segovia’s Jewish Quarter was home to one of the most important Hebrew communities in Castile from the 12th century until 1492. The neighborhood, marked by seven gates and dominated by the Main Synagogue (now the Church of Corpus Christi), was a walled enclave with streets such as Judería Vieja and Socorro. Notable figures like Abraham Senior, Chief Rabbi of Castile, lived here.

Coexistence with Christians was common until the 15th century, when segregation and pressure increased. After the expulsion, many buildings were transformed, but the medieval layout, the Didactic Center of the Jewish Quarter, and the sgraffito on the houses keep the Sephardic memory alive in Segovia.
