Córdoba: The Cradle of Sephardic Wisdom
The Jewish Quarter of Córdoba, located next to the Mosque-Cathedral, was one of the most influential Jewish neighborhoods on the Iberian Peninsula between the 10th and 15th centuries. Great figures such as Maimonides and Hasdai Ibn Shaprut flourished there, and the neighborhood became a center of Sephardic coexistence and intellectual development. Although it was walled and separated from the rest of the city, many Jews also lived outside its boundaries.
For centuries, the Jewish Quarter was a symbol of tolerance and prosperity, with an intense cultural and economic life. After the arrival of the Catholic Monarchs and the expulsion of 1492, the Jewish community disappeared, but its legacy remains in the Islamic layout of its streets and in monuments such as the synagogue.
Today, the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba is a World Heritage Site, and walking through its streets is to relive the memory of one of the brightest Sephardic communities in history.
