Jewish Heritage Tours in Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca: El Call Maior, Island Memory

In the Middle Ages, Palma was one of the main Jewish centers of the Mediterranean. The Call Maior, walled and with its own entrances, functioned as a small city within the city, with synagogues, schools, and guilds. The community, which numbered in the thousands, excelled in trade, crafts, and cartography, as demonstrated by the figure of Jafuda Cresques.

After the attacks of 1391 and the forced conversions of 1435, many Jews became chuetas, secretly maintaining their identity. Today, walking through Sol, Montesión, or Argenteria streets means delving into the history of Mallorcan Jews, among architectural remains and traditions that still endure in the city.
