Sephardic León: History, Memory, and Legacy of an Ancient Community

León was home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in northern Spain, with its first aljama in Puente Castro, active at least since the 11th century until its destruction in 1196. After this event, the Jews settled in the city center, around the present-day plazas Mayor, Santa Ana, and del Grano, where they actively participated in commercial and artisanal life. The Jewish quarter of León was never a closed ghetto, although in 1481 the segregation of Jews was decreed.

Among its notable figures is Moshé de León, author of the Zohar. After the expulsion of 1492, the Sephardic memory endures in the urban layout and in monuments such as the “ALJAMA” monolith in Puente Castro, a tribute to centuries of coexistence.
