Tour Description

Private Tour: Jewish Heritage in Barcelona

Discover Barcelona's Jewish history with our original VisitSefarad.com private tour, a 2-hour experience through the Call, the ancient medieval Jewish quarter in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.

We will begin our walking tour through the charming streets of the Gothic Quarter, in the very heart of old Barcelona. We will delve into the nooks and alleys that gave life to the Call, the historic Jewish quarter of the Middle Ages.

During the tour, we will explore how the Jewish community lived: their trades, customs, celebrations, and the illustrious figures who left an indelible mark on the city. We will discover the valuable cultural legacy that has survived to this day, enjoying Sephardic music and admiring the beautiful Catalan Haggadot, authentic handwritten gems of the Jewish Passover (Pesach). We will visit the Main Synagogue, the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe, along with other emblematic sites of medieval Jewish life in Barcelona.

Throughout the tour, we will learn the history of the Sephardic and Catalan Jews over the centuries: from their prosperous life on the peninsula to the tragic expulsion of 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs, and the subsequent return of the Hebrew community to the city. We will discover how, after more than five centuries, a new Jewish life is flourishing once again in these same corners.

  • The fascinating history of the Jews on the Iberian Peninsula.
  • The most emblematic places of Jewish life in medieval Barcelona.
